Job Description

Department 474 (D474) Non-Nuclear Maintenance and Repair Construction Engineering is an integral part of Electric Boat's Maintenance and Modernization business. With this business, Electric Boat provides mission-ready submarines to the fleet through maintenance, modernization, alterations and improvements. D474 engineers provide non-nuclear engineering support for maintenance and alteration activities on submarines, including the planning, execution, and certification of work. D474 routinely develops technical work documents (TWDs), provides technical direction and oversight, and evaluates shipboard conditions.

 

A multi-discipline group comprised of mechanical, structural, and electrical engineers, D474 Engineering operates in a collaborative, dynamic, team-oriented manner. Using a design-build approach, D474 interfaces with Operations, Design, Planning Yard, Test, and Program Office personnel in order to arrive at innovative solutions to difficult problems. Additionally, interaction with the United States Navy (USN) customer is typical, including the Supervisor of Shipbuilding Groton (SOSG), Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), and submarine crews.

 

D474 Engineering supports submarine overhaul work locally and remotely. ABET-accredited educational backgrounds (BS and/or MS, or equivalent) are instrumental. Strong written and verbal communication skills are utilized and fostered. A hands-on, proactive, deadline-driven engineering approach is the norm. Awareness and understanding of military specifications, submarine shipbuilding specifications and design criteria, USN maintenance/overhaul requirements, and special emphasis programs are developed through mentoring and training. As D474 engineers solve problems on the ship as well as in the office, effective use of personal protective equipment and adherence to safety regulations are necessary.

 

D474 electrical engineers are responsible for developing TWDs, providing technical direction and oversight, and resolving shipboard problems associated with the following:

 

  • Submarine non-propulsion electronic systems (NPES), including fire control, navigation, sonar, strain gage instrumentation etc.
  • Submarine hull, mechanical, and electrical (HM&E) systems, including control, indication, power distribution, interior communications, fiber-optic data distribution, electromechanical actuation, etc.

Tasks required of the D474 electrical engineer include, but are not limited to, the following:  

  • Planning of submarine maintenance and modernization work. This includes the development of work breakdown structures and the authoring of technical work documents.
  • Interpretation and translation of shipbuilding specifications, maintenance requirements, and contractual requirements.
  • Deck-plate support and resolution of emergent issues.
  • Development of technical rationale to support approval of nonconforming conditions.
  • Collaboration with engineers of other disciplines, including mechanical and structural.

Overtime is required. Travel and evening and/or weekend work are sometimes required based on department needs.

Education/ Experience

Required:

 

An ABET-accredited Bachelor of Science degree (or equivalent) in electrical, computer, or systems engineering with an electrical focus is required.

Two to 12 years of relevant work experience is required.

 

Preferred:

 

Prior experience related to USN ship maintenance and/or modernization is desirable.

 

Additionally, successful candidates will have the following qualities:

 

  • A strong foundational understanding of electrical engineering concepts, including the relationship between electrical systems/components and interfacing non-electrical constructs.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • An aptitude for problem resolution and facing new challenges.
  • The ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
  • A capability to work against deadlines or prioritize work assignments accordingly.

 An active Department of Defense secret or top secret security clearance is preferred; the ability to obtain one is required. Candidates must be willing and physically able to climb steep stairs and ladders, ascend/descend scaffolding, and access confined spaces within a submarine.
